Whether you’re just starting out with your first aquarium or an experienced fishkeeper looking to upgrade, the obvious challenge is to determine how much substrate – gravel, sand, or mixtures – you need to buy. That’s where our Rectangular Aquarium Substrate Calculator comes in!
Enter your tank’s width and length and the desired depth of substrate. Our handy calculator will quickly give you the amount of substrate your aquarium is capable of holding. Make sure to enter substrate depth and not the aquarium depth when using this calculator.
Notes on Aquarium Substrate:
- Typically, the recommended substrate depth ranges from 1 to 4 inches (2.5 to 10 cm), depending on the size of the aquarium and the plants in your aquarium.
- Even though the bags may be marketed as “pre-rinsed” or “pre-washed”, they should be carefully rinsed in a bucket at least three times.
- For quarantine and breeding tanks, a bare bottom is best.
