Lake Tanganyika Cichlids: Species Profiles, Setup & Breeding

Lake Tanganyika cichlids are a group of fish that are native to Lake Tanganyika, which is located in Africa and is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world. These cichlids are known for their bright colors, diverse body shapes, and complex social behaviors.

Some of the most well-known species from Lake Tanganyika include these Shell Dwellers and the frontosa cichlid. These species are popular among aquarists and are widely available in the aquarium trade.

They can range in size from 2 inches to over 12 inches in length. Like other African cichlids, many species form hierarchical societies and exhibit aggressive territorial behavior. Some species are strictly monogamous and show elaborate courtship rituals.

Additionally, many Lake Tanganyika cichlids are known for their parental care, with both parents participating in the care of their offspring.
