Lake Malawi Cichlids

The Lake Malawi Cichlids are incredibly colorful fish that can be found in many different colors and patterns. It is estimated there may exceed 800 species, but only 300 have been recognized so far;

The two main groups of fish found in this lake are Tilapiines and Haplochromines. The Haplochromines group contains 99% of the fish, which can be further subdivided into three subgroups: Mbuna, Haplochromis, and Astatotilapia. The first two contain the most species, while the Astatotilapia only has a single representative (A. calliptera ).
